She almost missed the turn off for Pine Hall, but saw it at the last moment. As she wove the car along the drive up to the house she wondered if the Barnards strung Christmas lights from all the pine trees. It would look so pretty. She found herself staring up at the house that had come into view in front of her and sighed; she was definitely in the wrong job, although she couldn’t be a dentist for a million pounds a year, but did they really make enough to live in houses like this? It was huge, there was a Land Rover parked outside, and she hoped it belonged to Esme Barnard and not Neil. Getting out of the car she wondered if they had dogs; with this much land she’d have a couple.

The door opened before she could even get up the steps to knock, and the woman from the pub CCTV stood there. She looked as if she was ready to go out.

‘Can I help you?’

‘Detective Morgan Brookes, have you got a minute?’

Esme Barnard rolled her eyes at Morgan, which instantly annoyed her.

‘Your friend was here yesterday. Have you come for a guided tour of the house? She said you would love it.’

She shook her head. ‘No, I’ve come to speak to you about Emily Wearing.’

Esme had turned to walk back inside, and she snapped her head back towards Morgan.

‘Why, is she in some kind of trouble?’

‘You could say that.’

Morgan followed her inside; it was dark until Esme hit the light switches and the cut-glass chandeliers came to life, illuminating the hallway and stairs. Amy was right, Morgan did love it, but she wasn’t going to tell Esme that; she had a right attitude – how had Amy thought she was okay?

Esme led her down to the kitchen, which was all black cabinets and walls with touches of gold, and Morgan did indeed find herself falling in love with the house. It wasn’t as nice as the one on the TV that she had a mild obsession with. She’d caught We Bought a Funeral Home on the Discovery Plus Channel while searching for a serial killer documentary back in October, on her week off, and had been captivated by the wonderful Blumberg family, their amazing funeral home and Heather Blumberg’s passion for design and all things Gothic. As she followed Esme into the kitchen, Morgan thought about how many death messages she had passed in people’s kitchens, how many interviews; most people she dealt with instinctively led her to the kitchen, the heart of the home, where they could make you a drink or one for themselves, if they needed to.

‘So, what has the silly bugger done now? Did she drive home after the pub and get done for drunk driving?’

‘I’m afraid it’s much worse than that.’

‘Oh, okay what could be worse? Is she hurt?’ She pointed to a black velvet bar stool at the huge kitchen island. ‘Take a seat.’

Morgan did and wished she wasn’t
